“To reach people is to feel their souls”
Artist Statement
The objective of my painting is to embrace the viewer by selecting subjects that portray the common denominators between people. I create oil paintings with steel wool and brushes. The textural elements represent the layers of common human expereineces and the use of brushes represent the complexity of our unique individualism, My focus is to portray the beauty of our diverse identity by embracing our common denominators; to provide a deep sense of connection that enables us to feel we are part of soemthing greater then ourselves, standing on common ground.
I attempt to offer a synopsis of familiar experiences translated into paintings. These images create a venue for the viewer to transfer themselves into a similar world. My objective is to use art as a means of unification. By transcending time and place, I try to provide an entrance point to empathize with people outside our daily routine. To reach people is to feel their souls. That is my goal as a painter.
International Exposure
Private collectors throughout France, Germany, England, and Tibet have purchased selected paintings by S. Newman. In 2007 Atea (formerly Ementor), one of Europe’s biggest IT companies with approximately 6,000 employees in over 7 countries, purchased “The Place To Be” by S. Newman, from the SF MOMA Artist Gallery. The President of the Norway branch wrote that: “The Place to be is our vision and your painting is our symbol. We are truly a culturally driven company and in many ways different. Your picture is used during International presentations to IT companies such as Apple and Cisco, on our presentation materials, and reproductions hang in all of our offices; the original is in the lobby of the main office in Oslo. Your name is a household name in our company and you are considered the mother of our vision.” In September 2011, between1300 – 1600 employees from the Norwegian division gathered at a conference to celebrate many years of hard work and success. The company invited S. Newman and her significant other, for an all-expense paid trip to join the festivities. They joined approximately 1000 employees from Atea to set a new Guinness Book of World record for the most people climbing the tallest mountain in Northern Europe.

The great migrations from 1910-1960 brought over 50,000 African Americans frOm the southeastern region of America to Chicago, creating a vital community. “From Afternoon Into Evening” is inspired by life in the chain of neighborhoods on the south side that quartered three-fourths of the city’s population. Within these crowded tenements and despite struggles, families lived strengthened by their love for one another. As an releif from the crowded apartments, families gathered outside on fire escapes to visit neighbors after a long days work, to relax with their children on hot summer days and to hang laundry, These common things which inadvertently brought people together in a shared space, helped to build a sense of community. “From Afternoon Into Evening” represents our desire to feel connected to one another.

“We Are One heart” is the essence of our humanity. We find joy with one another because relationships lend a sense of belonging and unity in an otherwise solitary existence. It is easy to embrace unfamiliar people because we share basic realities such as work, play, shelter, food, amd love. All individuals are unique. As a result, being unique is a common aspect of our human existence. These common denominators interconnect our many cultures and is the strength of America.
